Further Tensions in Brazil-China Relations in Wake of Covid-19

Brazil-China relations have been put to a further strain with the release by the Brazilian Supreme Court of a recording of a Government meeting where Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, says the Chinese Government should pay for a Marshall Plan to all countries that have been hit by Covid-19. China´s embassy in Brazil has avoided escalation.

Angola to receive 380 tons of biosafety equipment from China

To assist in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Health of Angola received on Monday the first of five cargos from China that will bring a total of 380 tons of biosafety materials, including such as medical ventilators, infrared thermometers and masks.

The local Association of Chinese Companies donated on Monday 6.5 million escudos (EUR 59 thousand) to the country, which will be channeled to the National Emergency Fund to fight the new coronavirus pandemic. The local government has praised Chinese support, from companies and the State.

UN´s Economic Commission for Africa Proposes 7 Lockdow Exit Strategies

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) estimates that a one-month full lockdown across Africa would cost the continent about 2.5 per cent of its annual GDP, equivalent to about USD 65.7 billion per month. With the costs of the Covid-19 lockdown mounting, the ECA is now proposing 7 Lockdow Exit Strategies for African Countries that that "provide sustainable, albeit reduced, economic activity".

The supplies, CLBrief has learned, have already arrived in Lisbon, Portugal.

According to a study from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTP), almost all African countries should have more than 1,000 cases by 1 May. Angola, Mozambique and Cabo Verde are among those where the number of infections is expected to peak later.
