Chinese Ambassador to Portugal Encourages CPLP Business Confederation

Chinese Ambassador to Portugal Zhao Bentang met with the CPLP Business Confederation (CE-CPLP) president, Nelma Fernandes, vice-president Vitório Cardoso and the organization´s new delegate for China and Macau, Carmen Wu, also an executive at Quinta da Marmeleira.

At the March 12 meeting in Lisbon, also attended by  ambassador Zhao encouraged Wu to actively use her role at CE-CPLP to further strengthen the exchanges between China and Portuguese speaking countries, to facilitate the friendly exchanges and close cooperation between Chinese and lusophone enterprises and individuals, as well as to promote the active participation of enterprises in the Belt and Road initiative, enhancing mutual understanding between the peoples of various countries, and to foster the exchange of knowledge between civilizations.

In her first visit to Lisbon in her new role, Wu also met with Tito Mba Ada, Ambassador of Equatorial Guinea to Portugal, and Giuliano Ferres Nascimento, Permanent Representative of Brazil to the CPLP, who said that companies and institutions from various Portuguese-speaking countries would start to organize their visit to Macau to participate in the Ministerial Meeting of the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao Forum).

Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste are members of the CPLP.

CE-CPLP was founded in 2002 by Portuguese-speaking governments and business entities, with the aim of strengthening the interaction and cooperation between the business community and promoting mutual economic development.

Developments in the construction of the Sino-Portuguese Business and Trade Cooperation Service Platform and the further strengthening of exchanges and cooperation between Equatorial Guinea, Brazilian enterprises and Chinese enterprises were also analyzed at Wu´s meetings in Lisbon.

Macau and Portuguese-speaking Countries Grieve Businessman Wu Zhiwei

In 2023, as the first CE-CPLP representative in China, the founder of Quinta da Marmeleira, Wu Zhiwei, actively promoted the exchange of enterprises Portuguese-speaking countries to visit the Greater Bay Area, promoted deepening cooperation between Chinese and Portuguese-speaking entities in culture, tourism and Chinese medicine.

He also promoted the establishment of the Macau and Portugal-speaking Countries Commercial Banking Alliance, and the establishement a financial service platform. Wu also attached great importance to the history of Portugal and Macao, and used his influence to actively promote visa-free entries for Portuguese in China.

In January 2024, Marmeleira´s Assistant Executive Carmen Wu became the Chinese representative of CE-CPLP, under the vice-president for China. The Macao Forum celebrates this year its 20th anniversary.
