Portuguese and Chinese Builders Win €636 million Contract in Mexico

Portuguese construction group Mota-Engil and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) have won a €636 million bid for the construction of the first stretch of the new railway infrastructure known as “Tren Maya” in Mexico. The Portuguese group has also won a USD 365 million project in Mozambique, related to the natural gas industry infrastructures.

The contract awarded in Mexico to Mota-Engil and CCCC, includes the construction of a 228 km stretch of railway — “the largest public railway investment project in recent years in Latin America”, according to a release by the group. The project “will support the promotion of the economic activity of 5 states in the south of the country (Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, Quintan Roo and Chiapas)”.

“This important award demonstrates the GROUP’s technical capabilities in railway construction, already shown in several geographies, and reinforces the presence of Mota-Engil as an essential player in the Mexican market and in the Latin America region. By achieving this relevant commercial goal in Mexico, Mota-Engil reinforces the balance of its activity between the three regions where it operates and confirms the sustainability of its business and strong commercial dynamics, even in times of pandemic”, the group adds.

In Mozambique, Mota-Engil was awarded, in a 50/50 partnership with BESIX, a project in Cabo Delgado province related to the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry, whose client is CCS JV. This “includes the construction of a pier bridge and an offloading facility in a total amount of circa 365 million dollars”.

The works will last 32 months, starting in the first half of 2020, being this the first contract awarded by CCS JV in the scope of exploration of Area 1 of the LNG project.

“This new project in Mozambique, which will be one of the largest LNG projects in the world in the next decade, confirms this country as one of the main drivers of the commercial dynamics of Mota-Engil África in the continent, highlighting the importance that the LNG project has and will continue to have”, the group adds.
