Chinese-Supported Hydropower Expansion Project to Create 3,000 Jobs in Angola

The Luachimo Hydropower Station repair and expansion project has been completed in Angola, according to its undertaker China Gezhouba Group Company Ltd., a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Cooperation.

Angola´s Minister of Energy and Water João Borges praised the project at the completion ceremony, stating that it is part of the country’s clean energy strategies and action plans, according to the local press.

The minister added that the project has created approximately 3,000 direct jobs for the local community, benefiting over 200,000 residents. It is of great significance for local access to electricity, improvement of social conditions, and the development of agriculture, livestock and mining industries.

Chinese Ambassador to Angola Zhang Bin remarked that the project is a successful example of cooperation between Angola’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources and Chinese enterprises.

He hoped that in the future, China and Angola will implement more similar cooperation projects to promote Angola’s economic and social development, enhance the well-being of the local people, and jointly create a better future.

As an important livelihood project under the Belt and Road Initiative in Angola, the Luachimo Hydropower Station will effectively alleviate the electricity demands of several towns in Lunda Norte Province.
