Chinese heavy equipment maker Sany supplies Brazil´s CSN Mineração with electric trucks and excavators

Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer Sany has made a delivery of electric trucks and excavators to CSN Mineração, the mining arm of Brazilian steelmaker CSN.

Sany sold a total of 23 electric trucks and three excavators to the Brazilian firm, along with nine electric trucks and six excavators to CSN Cimentos, the local company’s cement subsidiary, the Asian company said in a release.

The trucks and excavators arrive in Brazil to help satisfy growing demand for electric machinery among domestic mining companies to reduce their carbon footprints, as they will help them reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their activities.

Along with CSN, mining giant Vale recently announced that it is stepping up tests of electric locomotives. In April, it received its second 100% electric, battery-powered locomotive.

Manufactured in China by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive (CRRC ZELC), it will initially operate at the Ponta da Madeira terminal in the city of São Luis, Maranhão state.

Adalberto Maluf, president of local electric vehicle association ABVE, told BNamericas that Chinese firms are at the forefront of those jockeying to supply electric equipment to Brazilian mining firms. “China created a public policy to dominate the entire chain linked to the production of electric vehicles and batteries. Due to this, Chinese industry has become extremely competitive and is coming out on top in the supply of electrical equipment for various sectors”.
